Why Choose The Rowans?
The Rowans School offers a unique school environment for girls and boys aged three to seven years of age.
Set on a residential road in Wimbledon, the School opened in 1936, led by the resident Marjorie Hampton and her brothers. The homely and family-centred atmosphere remains strong to this day and the environment provides a nurturing and familiar start to school life for our youngest pupils.
We strive to provide the highest academic standards, harnessing the children’s natural enthusiasm and enquiring minds, whilst also developing their sense of self, their social skills and their awareness, respect and empathy for others.
The children’s time at The Rowans allows them to start their school career in a small, caring environment in which every child is recognised and known as an individual. Our children delight in the many opportunities afforded to them as they progress through the school – many of which might traditionally be held for much older children in other school settings, such as House Captain and School Council roles.
Our parents value their children’s time at The Rowans as it offers them the time to see and enjoy their children starting at their first school. Over the children’s time at the School we work closely with parents to learn about what makes their child thrive in all aspects of school life and together we use this valuable information to inform their next school choices and support the very best match for their future education.

| The school opens in 1936 led by resident Marjorie Hampton and brothers. |
| 1939 |
| By 1939, "Miss Hampton's" is a well-established schools, educating local children up to the age of 10, including some boarders. |
| 1976 |
| In 1976, Miss Hampton decides to close the school. Six parent families come to the rescue in a parent buy-out. |
| 1977 |
| In 1977, Mrs Gibbs, who joined the school three years previously, becomes Headmistress. |
| 1990 |
| In 1990, following Mrs Gibb's sudden death, then teachers Mrs Joan Anderson agrees to take over as Headmistress. |
| 2002 |
| In 2002, the Corporation of King's College School, Wimbledon acquire The Rowans School. |
| 2005 |
| In 2005, when Mrs Anderson becomes seriously ill, then teacher Mrs Elaine Tyrrell takes over as Headmistress. |
| 2011 |
| In January 2011, following Mrs Tyrrell's retirement, Mrs Suzie Wingrove is appointed Head by the Governors of King's College School. |
| 2016 |
| In September 2016, Mrs Joanna Hubbard joins the School as Head, having previously been Head of Upper School at a Pre-Prep School in Hampton. |
| 2017 |
| In September 2017, The Rowans School becomes part of the Shrewsbury House Shool Trust family. |
| 2021 |
| In February 2021, Miss Elizabeth Spratt becomes the Head, having previously been Deputy Head at The Rowans. |
